The day has finally come forChennai to witness its first spell of pre-Monsoon rains. Although interior parts of Tamil Nadu have been witnessing on and off pre-Monsoon rains, but the activity has been escaping the state capital so far.
However, the situation took a u-turn on Monday. Intense thunder clouds have already engulfed Chennai along with strong winds to the tune of 45 kmph. With this, mercury which had peaked to 36°C have dropped significantly and is now settling around 33°C. In case of rains, we can expect mercury to drop by couple of degrees more.
According to weathermen, thick convective clouds have already developed over the city and thus, rains are likely to commence any time now. We expect chances of one or two short spells of rains over western suburbs of Chennai today.

These rains can be attributed to a confluence zone which is extending up to Tamil Nadu. As a result, parts of North CoastalTamil Nadu have also started recording rains.At present, Kanchipuram and adjoining areas are receiving thundershowers activities.
However, these activities will not persist for long and by tomorrow, we expect weather activities to decrease gradually. As the weather system weaken, dry weather would again return to Coastal Tamil Nadu.
Pre-Monsoon rain in Chennai would once again return as we are expecting a low pressure area in Bay of Bengal. Models are indicating that the system would intensify further into depression and move towards Coastal Tamil Nadu.
