Published on May 26, 2017: After battling hot and humid weather, Chennai is likely to get some breather in form of pre-Monsoon activities today. Weather has already become cloudy and rain and thundershowers may begin any time soon over the state capital.
“Southern parts of Chennai may record one or two good spell of thundershowers today. Isolated thundershowers are also possible over other parts but intensity of rain will be much less over coastal areas,” said Mahesh Palawat, VP-Meteorology, Skymet Weather.
These rains can be attributed to a feeble trough extending from Telangana up to North Coastal Tamil Nadu across Rayalaseema. This trough has been concentrating lots of moisture over the city, which combined with high day temperatures has led formation of thunderclouds over North Tamil Nadu including Chennai.
According to Skymet Weather, rain and thundershowers are likely to show up during the late afternoon hours or evening.
In wake of this, maximum temperatures that had already reached to 41°C around 1 pm on Friday, has now decreased significantly by five degrees. At present, day maximum is around 36°C and is likely to drop even further now.
Although city does not record much rain and thundershowers during this time, but this year, pre-Monsoon rains have remained completely far and few. So far, the city has recorded mere 0.3 mm against its monthly average of 34.2 mm.
