Much to everybody’s surprise, Chennai rains made a comeback on Sunday that too with a bang. The state capital recorded whopping 84 mm of rain in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday.
Usually, being a rain shadow area, Chennai does not record much showers during the Monsoon. It is only when any weather system forms over Bay of Bengal or over nearby region that city records some good showers.
However, at present, no significant weather system is seen over Tamil Nadu. But occasional formation of a low-level trough over Coastal Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas is responsible for these rains.
According to Skymet Weather, in wake of this trough, southeasterly winds have been blowing over the city that has increased the moisture. This has led to cloud development by late evening on Sunday and thundershowers had started around 8 pm that lasted for 2-3 hours.
Now also, weather conditions will remain conducive for light to moderate Monsoon rains and thundershowers to continue over Chennai for the next 48 hours.

Weathermen predict that the trough is likely to persist over the region and as the day temperatures will peak, it will lead to formation of convective clouds over the city.

What can be touted as disappointment, weather will remain sultry throughout the day as rains will be for of short duration and not last for the whole day.
