Chennai rains surpass monthly average in just two days

After remaining dry for last several days, Chennai rains have made a comeback and that too with a bang. In span of last 48 hours, the capital city has recorded 89.6 mm of rain. With this, city has surpassed its monthly average rainfall of 55.3 mm of rain in mere two days.

On Monday, Chennai had received 36.4 mm of rain, while Tuesday witnessed 53.2 mm.

As reiterated by Skymet Weather, the rains can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation prevailing in West-Central Bay of Bengal off the Andhra Pradesh Coast.

Besides this, another cyclonic circulation is seen in its close proximity in Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast, which has also been enhancing the rains over the city.

Weathermen further predict that rains and thundershowers are likely to continue for next 24 hours, thereafter decreasing.
As we progress further, we expect both the systems to move in northerly direction. Hence, the rain belt is also likely to shift northwards, vacating North Coastal Tamil Nadu including Chennai.

Meanwhile, this fresh spell of rain has led to a significant drop in not only the maximum temperatures but minimum temperatures as well.

On Tuesday, Chennai recorded day maximum at 35.2°C that was three degrees below normal. While, minimum temperature settled at 24.1°C, four notches below average.
