Monsoon is in full swing over the country. All thanks to the new weather systems that have strengthened the Monsoon surge. With this, we saw entire country receiving rains and thundershowers of varying intensity and Chennai was no exception.
Monsoon may not be as active as over other parts but has been giving on and off rains over the state capital. Chennai has been recording showers for the past seven consecutive days that have been ranging from trace to moderate showers.
With this, Chennai has also surpassed its monthly average rainfall. So far, the city has recorded 78 mm of rain against its monthly mean of 55.9 mm.
According to Skymet Weather, we can expect some more rains for next 24 to 48 hours. This ongoing spell of rains can be attributed to the low pressure area prevailing in Bay of Bengal off the coastal parts of Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh. Though system may not be close to Tamil Nadu but the peripherals of the system are affecting large areas including coastal parts of the state.
However, as the system moves inland in west direction, rains will vacate the region and weather will go dry once again.
Being a rain shadow area, entire state including Chennai does not receive much rains during the Monsoon season, until and unless some strong systems develop in Bay of Bengal and moves along the coast.
The south coastal state records its majority of rains during the Northeast Monsoon that spans from October to December. Chennai also records more than 60% of its annual rainfall during this season.
