Northeast Monsoon lashed the city of Chennai and coastal stations of Tamil Nadu in the first week of November. The heavy downpour and led to waterlogging and several places. Along with the rain, strong gusty winds also accompanied.

The intensity of rains reduced marginally after November 6. However, a fresh spell of rain and thundershower have once again commenced over Chennai and coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Friday, Minambakkam Observatory in Chennai witnessed rain to the tune of 5 mm and Nungambakkam 2 mm of rain.
In the same span of time, Prangipettai recorded 49 mm of rain, Karaikal 43 mm and Atiramapattinam 13 mm of rain. As per the weathermen at Skymet Weather, a low-pressure area persist over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka coast. An associated upper air cyclonic circulation is extending up to 5.8 km above sea level.
At present northerly northeasterly winds are prevailing over Tamil Nadu region. The effect of these combined weather systems gave rains over coastal Tamil Nadu including Chennai. It is anticipated that the rainfall activity is likely to enhance gradually over the city. We expect rainfall of around 30 to 50 mm over the city during the next 36 hrs.

These on and off good rains are likely to continue until November 15, during this time, some heavy spells may again appear over the city. Waterlogging and heavy traffic jams may once again create chaos. Further, the north-northeasterly winds are also blowing at a speed of 10-20 kmph.
It is expected that these winds may gust up to 40 kmph during the thunderstorm activity. The temperature levels will remain below normal by 4-5°C leading to pleasant weather conditions with an overcast sky.
