Chennai has been practically dry for the last many days. On Tuesday evening, Chennai rains made a comeback.
Dark clouds descended over the region by late afternoon and finally brought thundershowers. The city recorded about 10 mm of rainfall on Tuesday and 1 mm on Monday. Yesterday, Tondi also received 14 mm of rainfall.
The last spell of good showers in Chennai occurred on July 17 when the city received double digits rainfall and recorded 36 mm. Thereafter, only light rains were observed in Chennai.
No significant weather system seems to be affecting the capital of Tamil Nadu. The spell of rainfall in Chennai during last 24 hours could be attributed to a feeble trough in the low levels along the East Coast, near North Coastal Tamil Nadu.
Light rains will continue over Chennai and northern parts of Coastal Tamil Nadu during next 24 hours. Thereafter, rains will reduce significantly over the region.
The subdivision of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry has received 16% more rains than normal so far this Monsoon season. Chennai and Tamil Nadu normally receives very less rainfall during the Monsoon season. The main rainy season for this part of Peninsular India is the Northeast Monsoon.
