After witnessing a prolonged dry spell, Tamil Nadu managed to record light rains on Tuesday. However, rains were confined to southern regions only. Although, rains escaped Chennai, but thick cloud cover had engulfed the state capital.

In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Tuesday, Kodaikanal and Karaikal recorded rains to the tune of 3 mm. In the same time frame, Cuddalore and adjoining regions recorded traces of rain.
These rains can be attributed to the weather system prevailing on either side of the coast. A cyclonic circulation has been prevailing over Southwest Bay of Bengal, off Sri Lanka coast, while a trough is extending along Kerala and Karnataka coast. Both the systems had made the conditions favourable for some weather activity.
Further, both the system would sustain their strength and thus, rain would continue in the southern parts of Tamil Nadu for the next 24 to 48 hours. But the intensity of rains would remain light.
With the oscillation of the system from east to west direction, Chennai too stands a chance to witness some rains but that would be very light in nature. If this happens, it would break the month-long dry spell over the city.

Weathermen expect Chennai rains may show up in the later part of the day. However, the weather would clear up by tomorrow. Since weather activity would not be too much, there would hardly be any change in the temperature profile over Chennai. The maximum temperature would continue to settle around 31 degrees Celsius and the minimum would hover at 22 degrees Celsius.
February is one of the driest months for Tamil Nadu including Chennai. Normally, the state capital records mere 3.4 mm rain of in the month. With the upcoming showers, Chennai stands a strong chance to surpass the monthly average.
