Chennai rains made a terrific comeback in the past day. In fact, the city received its first Monsoon spell of the season. Both the observatories recorded hefty Monsoon showers. In the last 24 hours from 8: 30 am on Wednesday, Nungambakkam observatory of Chennai recorded Heavy rain to the tune of 35 mm, followed by Meenambakkam at 30 mm of rains.

In the same span of time, Puducherry recorded 22 mm of rain, Parangipettai 22 mm, Atiramapattinam 11 mm and Salem 4 mm of rains.

Since the beginning of June the Interior districts and southern districts of Tamil Nadu were receiving light to moderate showers. However, rains remained absent from the northern and coastal areas such as Chennai and adjoining districts of Puducherry.

As per Skymet Weather, a feeble trough has developed over North Tamil Nadu leading to increased rain intensity over Chennai and adjoining areas. We expect Monsoon rains to continue over North Tamil Nadu during the next 24 hours. Chennai rains will also appear during the next 24 hours.

Thereafter, rains will decrease over most parts of the state as the offshore trough along the West Coast will strengthen and thus the rains will increase over West Coast leading to drier weather conditions over Tamil Nadu. Though, rains will not dissipate completely. On and off light to moderate showers will continue over the state of Tamil Nadu.
