Chennai rains intensify as Northeast Monsoon arrives early, heavy rains by October 20

On and off light Chennai rains have been making appearance over the city for the last one week. However, rains picked up pace during the last 24 hours, wherein the city recorded moderate showers to the tune of 30 mm. Well this can also be attributed to the early onset of Northeast Monsoon over the region, that was declared on October 16.

According to Skymet Weather, owing to strong Monsoon surge, we can expect moderate rains with few intense spells to lash Chennai and suburbs today. In fact, few spells of rains and thundershowers have already drenched parts of Chennai and nearby areas.

However, these rains are likely to take a brief break Friday onwards. As per weathermen, a low pressure area has developed over Southeast Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast. With this, winds and moisture would now concentrate around the system for the next two days. As a result, we would significant decrease in the rainfall intensity.

According to weathermen, rain in Chennai would make a thumping comeback around October 20. This would be on account of  a cyclonic circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal which would induce a low pressure area near South Tamil Nadu around October  20. The system would be further travelling along the East Coast.

Secondly, the low pressure in Southeast Arabian Sea, by that time would have moved ahead in north-northwest direction along Maharashtra coast.

Thus, we can expect moderate to heavy rains to lash Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu October 20 onwards for at least two days.

October is known to be the second rainiest month for Chennai, with November being the rainiest. The city is one of prime beneficiary of the three-month long Northeast Monsoon, during which Chennai records over 60% of its annual rainfall.

And with this year, Northeast Monsoon making an early onset along with favourable oceanic conditions, we are looking for positive season ahead. Last year i.e. 2018 had left Tamil Nadu, particularly Chennai high and dry, with season recording large rainfall deficiency to the tune of 44%.
