Chennai rains have picked up pace after Southwest Monsoon officially bid adieu to the country. Moreover, the city has been seeing good rains for the last 48 hours or so.

In the last 24 hours also, Nungambakkam observatory recorded a whopping 53 mm of rainfall.

In fact, a holiday has been announced by the Tamil Nadu Government for schools and colleges in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur for today.

These rainfall activities can be attributed to the presence of a Cyclonic Circulation over Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu Coast. Moreover, due to a Cyclonic Circulation over Southeast Arabian Sea, the system is getting strengthened on the other side as well.

As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, Chennai rains are expected to remain heavy for another 24 to 48 hours or so. Moreover, a few very hefty showers may also occur over the city and its adjoining areas in the coming days.

As per disaster management and relief officials, precautions have already been taken and rescue workers are prepared if situation gets grim over the area.

Not only this, the Mettur reservoir and the water bodies are full and are being closely watched. The State Disaster Relief Fund has strengthened and over 1250 police personnel have also been trained. The National Disaster Relief Forces (NDRF) have also been put on alert.
