Chennai rains cross 100 mm, depression to give torrential showers

Chennai rains have made a comeback. Heavy to very heavy rain has been observed over the capital city of Tamil Nadu since yesterday. While the city recorded 71 mm rainfall between 8:30 am on Monday and 8:30 am on Tuesday, rains continued to lash the city even after that.

Presently, Chennai continues to receive rain and these showers will continue to lash the city for at least another 24 hours. During the last 9 hours from 8:30 am today, Chennai has recorded 44 mm rain. While the city recorded 5 mm rain during the first three hours, rainfall intensity increased after 11:30 am and 39 mm rain was recorded during the second half. With this the city managed to cross the 100 mm rainfall mark with aplomb.

The well-marked low, which was over Bay of Bengal has now intensified into a depression. The system has also moved north northwestwards and is currently 240 km south south-east of Chennai. This system is also expected to intensify into a deep depression during the next 48 hours.

Chennai rains are likely to continue during the next 24 hours. In fact, heavy to very heavy showers are likely over the capital city of Tamil Nadu. During this period, the city could also see flooding rains. Power cut woes and water logging will also be observed.
