Chennai rains mainChennai rains sort of revived during the last few days. In fact, the city recorded a few good spells during this period. Between August 28 and 31, a few good spells of rains were witnessed over the capital city of Tamil Nadu.

These Monsoon rains took a slight break on the first day of September, however, the last 24 hours were very good for Chennai.

In fact, the Nungambakkam observatory recorded a whopping 76.2 mm rain in a span of 24 hours. Good rains of 26 mm were also recorded at the Minambakkam observatory during the same time frame.

These rains can be attributed to the feeble trough in close proximity of the city along with the change in wind pattern. Also, due to the weather system over Chhattisgarh, moisture incursion has increased from the Bay of Bengal.

The monthly mean for Chennai during the month of September stands at 137 mm. In just a span of 24 hours, the city has received more than 50 percent of its monthly mean. During the next 24 hours, the state capital is expected to receive a few spells of light rain. In fact, the possibility of moderate rains also cannot be ruled out.

While good rains have been observed on a few occasions, the rainfall deficiency is still high. At present, Chennai is 30 percent rain deficient. Conditions do not look too favourable for the deficiency to transform into normal rains.
