Chennai rains have finally made a grand comeback. While the city remained parched for four long months, Chennaites rejoiced on May 16 when heavy rains lashed the capital city giving them that much-needed respite from the prevailing weather conditions.
During the last 21 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, the Minambakkam Observatory in Chennai has recorded a whopping 64 mm rain. The city has surpassed its monthly average rainfall in just 21 hours which stands at 43.9 mm.
Also, Chennai has not received such heavy rains in this time span during the last five years. In fact, the last time the city received such heavy rain was in 2010 when 204 mm rain was recorded in 24 hours. During the next 24 hours, Chennai is likely to receive more rains and some more records may be broken during this time.
These rains can be attributed to the weather system which continues to persist in the Bay of Bengal. The system has intensified into a low-pressure area and continues to sustain. The conditions are favourable for further intensification of the well-marked low, thus, a depression is likely to form during the next 24 hours.
As per Skymet Meteorology Division in India, more heavy showers are expected to lash the city during the next 24 hours. Overcast sky conditions can be expected throughout the day. In fact, the possibility of flooding rain also cannot be ruled out. Waterlogging can also be expected during this period.
