Chennai rains all set to make a comeback

August 24, 2016 9:04 AM |

Chennai rainsMonsoon rains are expected to make a reappearance over Chennai, which has been mainly dry for the last many days. According to Skymet Weather, a feeble trough is extending from the low pressure area over Northeast Madhya Pradesh up to North Tamil Nadu across interiors of Peninsular India.

In wake of this, city has already reported traces of rain. Further, we can expect on and off patchy light rains and thundershowers over the capital city during the next 24 hours.

These rains are likely to intensify from August 26 onward, as a fresh low pressure area is likely to form in west-central Bay of Bengal off the Andhra Pradesh coast.

According to weathermen, the system will move inland and bring light to moderate showers over North Tamil Nadu including Chennai. This will be a prolonged spell of rains which is expected to continue till end of the month. However, rains will not be heavy and widespread in nature and many places will get only short spells of rain and thundershowers.

So far, Chennai has recorded mere 23.4 mm of rain against its monthly average of 140.4 mm of rain. However, with these rains approaching, we expect situation to improve up to some extent.

At present, the cumulative rainfall deficiency for Tamil Nadu stands at 3%, which is almost normal. The state including Chennai does not record much rains during the Southwest Monsoon as it falls under a rain shadow region.

The state records its majority of rainfall during the Northeast Monsoon that spans from October to December. Chennai also records more than 60% of its rainfall during that period.
