Chennai rainsChennaihas been receiving on and off good rainfall ever since the beginning of September. The Minambakkam Observatory has already recorded 117 mm of rain so far, against the monthly mean of 137.3 mm.

Now as we progress further, we can expect few more spells of good rain and thundershowers to lash the state capital during the next 2-3 days. All thanks to the couple of Monsoon systems that are affecting the weather over Chennai. According to Skymet Weather, the low pressure area over north coastalAndhra Pradeshcontinues to persist.

In addition to this, wind discontinuity is also seen over Tamil Nadu. All the systems combined together will bring moderate showers over Chennai during the next 48 hours.

Weathermen predict that in wake of this, the monthly average of the city may get surpassed within the first half of the month itself. Though the intensity of rain will be more over North Coastal Tamil Nadu but remaining parts of the state will also witness scattered rains.

At present, the cumulative rainfall deficiency for Tamil Nadu stands at 3%, which is considered to be more or less normal rains for the region.

The intensity of rain will increase significantly as we enter into October with the with the commencement of the Northeast Monsoon.  The season, that spans from October to December, gives majority of the annual rainfall over the state. Chennai also records more than 60% of its rainfall during this season.
