Rain in ChennaiUpdated on January 24 2016 12:30 PM: A low level cyclonic circulation persists over Lakshadweep and its adjoining areas. A trough is extending from Southwest Bay of Bengal to Coastal Sri Lanka.

During the last 24 hours, light rain has occurred over parts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai where trace of rainfall was recorded.

Parangipettai received 6 mm of rainfall, Puducherry 0.4 mm. Also, a few drops were observed over Nagapattinam, Karaikal, and Coimbatore.

Chennai will remain rain free during the next 24 hours as the rain belt has shifted towards the western parts of Tamil Nadu. Isolated rainfall activity is expected along the coast and interior parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.

Story first published on January 23, 2016: After remaining dry for last few days, Chennai witnessed scattered light rain during last 24 hours. Not only this, weather activity is here to stay for some more time.

Chennai recorded 2 mm of rain in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday. According to Skymet Weather, scattered showers will continue over the capital city of Tamil Nadu for another 24 to 48 hours.

The fresh rain activity can be attributed to a trough extending from South Coastal Andhra Pradesh up to South Tamil Nadu. But the prevailing weather system is feeble in nature and hence, incapable of giving any heavy showers.

This feeble trough is expected to become insignificant after two days. With this, weather will go dry again but the sky will remain partly cloudy.

In wake of rainy weather, maximum temperatures will also drop marginally and levels of humidity in the air will also increase. However, weather will largely remain comfortable.

Since last many days, Tamil Nadu including Chennai is witnessing dry and comfortable weather which is a huge relief after the massive floods that rocked the city last month.

After withdrawal of the Northeast Monsoon, Chennai has not recorded any significant rainfall. So far, Chennai has received mere 2 mm of rain against the monthly average of 22.5 mm.

And with no significant weather in offing as well, city is expected to end January on mainly drier note.
