Heavy to very heavy rain has been observed in parts of Chennai and coastal areas of Tamil Nadu in last 24 hours. A possible cyclone developing in the Bay of Bengal is approaching the Tamil Nadu coast rapidly which will continue to give heavy and torrential rain over these areas.

The rainfall in Nungambakkam is second highest rainfall in last ten years to have occurred in the span of 24 hours. The highest rainfall in the span of 24 hours stands at 150 mm. All time high rainfall in 24 hours occurred in year 1976 and which was 452 mm.
Due to the heavy downpour, schools in Chennai and adjoining areas have been shut. Rain has also led to traffic snarls while it continues to affect mobile phone network.
