Relentless scorching weather has refused to take a back seat as Chennai continues to battle hot and humid weather. What is more disturbing is the fact that there is no relief likely in coming days as well.
The maximum temperatures across capital city are still settling above normal by several degrees. Nights are also very uncomfortable as minimum temperatures are also higher than the season’s average.
On Friday, Minambakkam Observatory recorded day temperature at 38°C and night temperature of 26.8 mm. While Numgambakkam Observatory witnessed day maximum at 36°C and minimum temperature at 28.8°C.
The normal average day and night temperature for the city stands around 35°C and 26°C, respectively.
In addition to this, increased levels of humidity is further adding to the woes of people. Being a coastal station, humidity levels are as high as 90% in morning. Though it reduces during day time but still settles between 50% and 60%.
According to Skymet Weather, no major change is expected in the temperature profile due to absence of pre-Monsoon showers. In April, the city has remained absolutely dry in comparision of its monthly average of 7.7 mm.
Weather models indicate that no pre-Monsoon showers activity is approaching the city for at least next 8-10 days.
However as the second half of May approaches, pre-Monsoon activity is likely to pick up pace. Chennai witnesses average rainfall of 43.9 mm during May.
Major relief only comes in with the onset of Southwest Monsoon. Again, it does not rain as much as in neighbouring Kerala but change in wind pattern restricts the substantial rise in mercury.
