Meteorological center at Nungambakkam and airport observatory at Meenambakkam recorded 128mm and 124mm rainfall respectively in the last 48hr. Monthly total for June between 01st-21stJune now reads 130mm and 126mm for these locations respectively. These figures happen to be the 5th highest on record, since the year 2000.

Capital city Chennai lies in the rain shadow area during southwest monsoon season. Merely 30% of annual rainfall is observed during the monsoon months from June to September. Opening month June has a modest normal of 55.8mm. However, the city has invariably exceeded this target since 2006, except in 2020.
Courtesy, cyclonic circulation in the southwest Bay of Bengal, off North Tamil Nadu and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh, the region received moderate showers on 19th and 20thJune. This feature has become less marked. However, the latest situation shows a north-south trough extending from Chhattisgarh to North Tamil Nadu across South Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
More rain and thundershowers are expected over Chennai and suburbs today, in the evening and night. These showers will become mild for the next 2 days and cease thereafter. Between 24th and 30thJune, the city will witness sultry and hot conditions. Rain and showers, if any, will be patchy and fleeting, lasting for very short duration.
