As reiterated by Skymet Weather, after a long time Chennai received light rainfall on New Year’s Eve and early morning hours of New Year’s Day. This rainy spell was due to the development of a feeble trough over Tamil Nadu coast.
At present, this feeble trough has become insignificant over the region and we expect dry weather conditions to persist over the city for now.
Meenambakkam observatory received very light rainfall of 1 mm whereas Nungambakkam witnessed light showers. However, as of now the weather may remain cloudy to partly cloudy over Chennai and its neighboring areas for next 24 hours.
At present, another cyclonic circulation is developing over South Andaman Sea. This weather system is very much likely to intensify into a low pressure system soon. This weather system is expected to move in a West-Northwesterly direction at first. But how this system shapes up or if and where it will give rain is too early to comment on.
If the weather system moves in a northwesterly direction and closer to Tamil Nadu coast then only it will give rains over Chennai but to pin-point on a date is too premature.
