Chennai and Mumbai are the two coastal cities situated on the either side of the Indian coast, East Coast and West Coast, respectively. They are both separated by the latitudinal difference of six degrees, thus, both the cities are subjected to different weather conditions during December.

Mumbai witnesses comfortable weather conditions during the month. The city hardly observes any significant rainfall activity in December, with its monthly average rainfall of 5.3 mm only.

However, there can be times of exception as October to December is also the cyclone season. Some of the weather systems may form in Arabian Sea and travel along the West Coast, giving rains over Mumbai.

Cyclone Ockhi is the recent example, where in system developed in Southeast Arabian Sea and travelled in north direction, giving heavy rain over Mumbai.

Barring these occasions, the entertainment capital does not see much variations in the weather during December. Weather over Mumbai is governed by the land breeze and sea breeze. Days are mainly comfortable and slightly warm in the morning hours but as the sea breeze sets in during afternoon, weather turns windy and temperatures start dropping.

In fact, nights become more comfortable on account of land breeze and temperatures 14-16°C.

Meanwhile, December is considered to be the wet season for Chennai on account of the Northeast Monsoon. The normal average rainfall for the city stands at 177.4 mm, with around seven rainy days.

In fact, entire Tamil Nadu including Chennai remains vulnerable for range of weather systems, right from cyclonic circulations to a cyclone. In wake of the Monsoon surge, humid northeasterly winds continue blow over the city for the entire month, keeping the weather favorable for the rain activity of varying intensity.

With this, days are warm and humid, with maximum temperatures ranging from 29 – 30°C, while nights are comfortable with mercury in lower 20s.

Thus, despite Chennai being affected by Northeast Monsoon during this period, Mumbai weather remains more comfortable as compared to the conditions over the capital city of Tamil Nadu.
