The city beautiful, Chandigarh is situated on the foothills of the Shivalik range at an elevation of 1170 foot. Due to its virtue of the position in the foothills, the twin capital of Punjab and Haryana is susceptible to some weather activity during both, the summer as well as the winter months.

Winter rains begin to make an appearance over the city November onwards. However, during the month of November, these rains are not too frequent and are very light in nature. Meanwhile, during the month of December, the city does record some rainy spells.

Moreover, with the Shivalik range witnessing some snowfall activity during this period, the average minimum for December drops to 6.7 degrees from about 11 degrees in the month of November.

Any active Western Disturbance moving across the Western Himalayas along with its induced cyclonic circulations in the plains gives weather over Chandigarh. One such Western Disturbance is presently moving across Jammu and Kashmir. The system has induced the cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and adjoining Haryana.

Both these systems are moving eastwards; thus, rains are likely to begin over Chandigarh anytime now. Not only this, the city is already witnessing overcast sky conditions and rains are expected today. These rainfall activities are expected to continue until December 14 with slight breaks in between.

Light rains are likely to happen today, however, sky may clear up tomorrow during the day but rains are expected again during the night. Once again, December 13 and 14 are expected to witness some rains.

These rains are expected to be the first winter rains for the city of Chandigarh. So far, in November as well as December, Chandigarh has seen negligible amount of rain. During the month of November, the city saw some trace of rainfall in December, so far being dry.

Due to this, conditions will become chilly, both during the day and the night. Temperatures will also witness a significant drop. While the city does not usually see foggy mornings during winter months as compared to other areas, with the passage of Western Disturbance, fog may make an appearance for some time, but it will clear up soon.
