Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Patiala and Ambala likely to see rains beginning January 6

January 4, 2020 1:05 PM |

After a spell of severe cold during the end of December, the temperatures are continuously increasing over the states of Punjab and Haryana. This rise in temperatures can be traced back to the presence of a Western Disturbance, which is moving across higher latitudes since January 1. Due to the presence of this system, the blowing northerly chilly winds have cut off over the region leading to an increase in temperatures.

Partly cloudy to mainly clear sky with bright sunshine is prevailing over both Punjab and Haryana since January 1. As the above system would be moving away during the next 24 hours, hence night temperatures are likely to decrease marginally over Punjab and Haryana while day temperatures will increase slightly due to the prevailing clear sky conditions. Also, moderate to dense fog is likely to appear over most areas on January 5 due to low temperatures and availability of moisture.

Soon after, another Western Disturbance is likely to approach the Western Himalayas in quick succession. The effect of this Western Disturbance will be seen over Southwest parts of Punjab and western parts of Haryana in the form of light rain and thundershower after 24 to 30 hours. Places like Bhatinda, Fatehabad, Sirsa and Hisar are likely to see these rains.

The entire states of Punjab and Haryana are likely to see light to moderate rain and thundershowers on January 6 and 7. These rains will be more pronounced over northern parts of the states as compared to the southern parts. Places like Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Bhatinda, Moga, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Patiala, Ambala, Sirsa, Fatehabad, Hisar, Rohtak, Jind and Karnal etc will experience these rains and thundershowers. Hailstorm activities might also be seen at isolated places.

This is when the day temperatures are likely to decrease while night temperatures will start rising January 6 onward. These rains will turn out beneficial for the crops of wheat, mustard, gram and sugarcane etc.
