Winter rains had become a distant dream for the residents of the plains of North India. In fact, the chilly winter days overall had also become a distant dream for many states in the North Indian Plains. So much so that many areas were witnessing temperatures above the normal levels.

However, in a turn of events, winter rains have finally made an appearance over North India. All thanks to the combination of the present Western Disturbance over the Western Himalayas and its induced cyclonic circulation over North Rajasthan and adjoining Haryana.

Delhi and the NCR region also witnessed a few good spells of rain during the last 24 hours. However, it was the joint capital city of Punjab and Haryana which witnessed record breaking rains. Not only this, Chandigarh also witnessed hailstorm.

During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, Chandigarh recorded a whopping 65 mm of rainfall along with golf ball sized hailstorm as well.

Not only this, these rains have been the highest since at least a decade. In fact, its all-time 24-hour rainfall record stands at 82.3 mm which was recorded on January 9, 1995.

The monthly rainfall figure for Chandigarh stands at 33.1 mm of rain. Thus, the city has already witnessed almost double the amount of rains.
