Chances bright for pre-Monsoon showers in Delhi, respite likely from extreme heat

Severe heat wave conditions until June 10 had Delhi and NCR gasping for breath. Hot and dry North-Northwesterly winds blowing in the region had pushed up the temperatures to an extremely uncomfortable level. Testifying the fact was the Palam Observatory in Delhi, where the day temperature yesterday set an all-time record of 48°C.

However, the wind direction has changed now and humidity has increased over many parts of northwest plains including Delhi. Although surface winds are still Northwest, moisture incursion is taking place from the Arabian sea at upper levels of above 5000 feet. This influx of moisture is in combination with high temperatures, which is leading to the formation of thunderclouds over Delhi and NCR area. These thunderclouds are capable of dust storm, rain and thundershower activities.

Presently a Cyclonic Circulation has formed over Central Pakistan and adjoining Rajasthan. A Trough is also seen extending up to Bangladesh while passing north of Delhi.

Thus, pre-Monsoon activities in terms of light rain have once again commenced over Delhi and NCR after a long recess. We expect these on and off pre-Monsoon activities to continue in Delhi and its adjoining areas for the next 24 to 48 hours. Thereafter, the weather will once again become dry but moderate to strong winds will continue raising dust and increasing pollution levels in the city.

These pre-Monsoon activities will once again pick up pace around June 15 or 16, in the wake of Cyclone Vayu, which is heading towards Gujarat coast. Its effect will be felt over Gujarat and Rajasthan as well as over Delhi and NCR in the form of an increase in moisture content which will again lead to the formation of thunderclouds and subsequent pre-monsoon activities.
