Central India to receive good rains in coming days, kharif crops to benefit

July 31, 2015 2:21 PM |

Rain in Central IndiaCurrently in Central India, West Madhya Pradesh (MP), Saurashtra and Kutch, and Gujarat region are receiving above normal rains. West Madhya Pradesh has recorded +51% rainfall, Saurashtra and Kutch +44%, and Gujarat +13% excessive rains. However, all other regions of Central India are facing a rainfall deficit with Marathwada (-55%) being the most affected out of the lot.

During last one week, Gujarat and West Madhya Pradesh have received very good amounts of rain due to the deep depression residing over Gujarat, adjoining South Rajasthan, and West Madhya Pradesh. Due to this, heavy rainfall has been witnessed over the region.

But now, as per Skymet Meteorology Division in India, subdued rainfall activity is expected over this region for the next 2 days. Thereafter rain is likely to increase over the region. Odisha, Chhattisgarh, East MP, and Vidarbha region are also expected to receive plentiful rains stemming from Cyclone Komen which has entered Bangladesh and is now moving westward as a deep depression.

Gradually the system will weaken into a depression and then into a low pressure area. But even then, it will continue to move westward and lead to increased rainfall activity over parts of Chhattisgarh and East MP for next 48 hours. Later on, the system will stretch the rain belt over most parts of MP and Vidarbha by August 3. Heavy rainfall is likely over South Chhattisgarh, adjoining areas of Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha. Madhya Maharashtra is also expected to receive scattered rainfall from August 4 and 5. Intensity of rain will remain light to moderate. In addition to this, Gujarat is also expected to receive a fresh spell of rain around August 7 and 8.

The approaching showers over Marathwada will be of great benefit to the Kharif crops as the region has been observing drought-like conditions this season. Rains in this part of the country will benefit crops already sown as well as crops which will be sown late.

In the next one week, East MP, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha are likely to overcome the rain deficit these parts are currently facing. With sufficient rains, these parts may as well exceed the normal rainfall mark.
