Scanty pockets of Central and Peninsular India receive good amounts of rain

In the last few days the weather systems have built up in such a fashion that good rainfall has largely been confined to central parts of the country, particularly Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha. Maharashtra and Gujarat were the only pockets in the region where Monsoon rains were scarce. This was due to the interaction of the low pressure area over Madhya Pradesh with the Western Disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir.

But in the last two days some very good amounts of rain have been observed in the dry pockets of Gujarat and the sub-divisions of Vidarbha, Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra.

For instance, Godhra and Idar in Gujarat have received 78 mm and 71.2 mm of rain, respectively in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday. During the same period Bhuj has also recorded 17 mm of rain, which is the first spell in July for the city.

During the same period, Aurangabad and Jalna in Marathwada have recorded 27 and 23 mm of rain, respectively. In Madhya Maharashtra, Bhira has recorded very heavy rain of 154 mm, while Pune has observed 15 mm of rain.

The dry areas of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu have also breathed a sigh of relief with some good rain being observed in the region. In last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh has recorded 41 mm of rain. Lam and Bapatla have witnessed 61 mm and 36 mm of rain, respectively. Maruteru has also recorded 27 mm of rain.

In Rayalaseema Kurnool has observed 24 mm of rain during the same period, while Karaikal in Tamil Nadu has received 21 mm of rain.

Some places like Jagitayal and Adilabad in Telangana have recorded 17 mm and 16 mm of rain, respectively.

Two factors are responsible for rain in these dry regions. Firstly the cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal and secondly the low pressure area, which is supported by the cyclonic circulation in south Rajasthan and adjoining Gujarat and MP region.

Due to the above systems, the shear line is getting activated. The systems are also triggering the Monsoon surge over Kerala region.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, there are chances of light to moderate rain for a couple of days more in all the above regions.
