This year Southwest Monsoon made a delayed onset over Uttar Pradesh. However, after making an onset, rains had picked up the in a fast pace and good showers continued over many parts of the state particularly north and central districts received occasional heavy to very heavy showers.
Moreover, the month of August witnessed extremely heavy rains making an appearance over many districts of Uttar Pradesh. The capital city Lucknow, which has a monthly normal of 213.7 mm has received 642 mm of rains, which is almost three times the normal. Similarly, Bareilly which has a monthly average of 310 mm witnessed a whopping 1000.5 mm of rainfall., in fact, more than three times its monthly average.
Southwest Monsoon remained vigorous over these two districts along with several other districts during the second and the fourth week of August. Heavy rains had lashed these districts between August 10 and 13 and again between August 23 and 25.
Moreover, even now, the axis of Monsoon trough is running via Uttar Pradesh due to which Bareilly and Lucknow have already seen heavy showers. In fact, these rains have resulted in flooding conditions over Bareilly, Badayun, Moradabad, Shahjahanpur, etc.
In fact, these areas are expected to see heavier to very heavy rains during the next 48 hours. Rivers are also in spate and may see more such conditions in the coming days. Due to this, the first week of September may also see near record-breaking rains.
