As the harvesting season nears, the key grain-growing states of Punjab and Haryana are all set to reap a bumper harvest of wheat this season. According to an estimate this year’s harvest can even reach at nearly 300 lakh tonnes.
Breaking the number, for the state of Punjab, the agriculture department is expecting about 180 lakh tonnes of wheat production this season against 175 lakh tonnes in 2018. The neighboring state of Haryana is expecting to reap 120 lakh tonnes of wheat, which is almost the same to what the State produced last year.
The promise of a good harvest comes amidst a bountiful Winter accompanied with one after the other episodes of light rain.
However, the harvest period may be delayed by a week due to upcoming rains and winds being forecast in the next 2-3 days for both the states.
Wheat, a rabi crop is a major grain and a staple diet all over the country which is grown in the winter season. Sowing begins by late October and is usually harvested as soon as April starts.
As per Skymet forecasters, a fresh weather system in the form of Western Disturbance will start affecting the region March 25 onward. This will bring rains over the region for the next some days, increasing the moisture content and thus delaying the harvest by at least next 7 to 10 days.
