Break monsoon period becomes a boon for Chennai

August 23, 2023 2:22 PM |

The month of August has been pretty decent for Chennai as the city has recorded some good rainfall activities. In fact, during the last 24 hours the Meenambakkam observatory recorded 68.4 mm of rainfall where as Nungambakkam only saw 2 mm.

Moreover so far, the Meenambakkam Observatory has already recorded 274.1 mm against 144 mm. The reason for such excessive rains has been the continuous break monsoon period in the month of August.

Whenever the monsoon is weak or there is a monsoon break period, a troughline develops along the south coastal Andhra Pradesh and coastal Tamil Nadu region resulting in some intense rainfall activities. This trough however only gets activated over Coastal Tamil nadu and Coastal Andhra Pradesh region and the rest of the South Indian region does not see rains.

Such a situation is expected to continue for the next coming days due to which, rainfall activity is expected to continue over Chennai as well as other adjoining parts of coastal Tamil Nadu. These showers will be light to moderate in nature with some parts even recording isolated heavy rainfall.
