Break Monsoon conditions begin; would not stay for long

August 2, 2018 2:38 PM |

RAJASTHAN POST

Monsoon made an early onset on the Indian mainland. It arrived over the state of Kerala a day before the scheduled time. It made a good progress up to Northeast India. However, thereafter, Southwest Monsoon became stagnant for almost a week without any further progress, leading to a delayed onset over Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

But, soon after the lull period, it made a steady progress and arrived over Delhi on time. Moreover, it covered the entire country well before time.

Interestingly, it has been raining over most parts of the eastern half of the country, in regions like East Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha; the western half of the country, states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, West Haryana and Delhi are recording some occasional showers only which is case of ‘Break Monsoon’.

‘Break Monsoon’ occurs when the axis of Monsoon trough shifts to the foothills of the Himalayas. Due to which, the winds to the south of the axis of Monsoon trough starts blowing from west direction. As these winds are dry in nature, it leads to dry weather over most parts of the country.

This time, the western end of the axis of Monsoon trough has shifted to the foothills of Himalayas. Thus, the winds over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, most parts of Rajasthan, parts of West Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are blowing from west and northwest direction, leading to dry weather.

As of now also, these dry westerly winds are expected to blow and thus, we expect, the weather to remain dry over all the above-mentioned regions for at least the next 3-4 days.

Fortunately, the eastern end of the axis of Monsoon trough is still over Indo-Gangetic plains. Moreover, the low-pressure area is also persisting over Bihar and adjoining parts. Hence, good rains are likely to continue over East and Northeast India.

As per Skymet Weather, typical ‘Break Monsoon’ conditions have not occurred over the country for the last few years as it occurs when the entire axis of Monsoon trough, right from Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh to Assam and Arunachal Pradesh shifts to the foothills, leading to absolutely dry weather over the entire country.

Break monsoon conditions usually last for two to three occasions in the entire Monsoon season. However, this time, the conditions would be short-lived and Monsoon rains are likely to revive around August 7.
