On May 27, a search operation began when an 8 member team went missing which included climbers from UK, US and Australia en route to one of the most difficult peaks in the Indian Himalayas, Nanda Devi East.
Not only is the terrain a very tough one, but also it does throw technical challengers to the mountaineers who attempt to scale this peak. There have been many casualties since the time it was first scaled by a four member team of Polish people.
The scale is not only circular, but it is also steep, slippery and even prone to avalanches. A total of 12 climbers had set out but after they reached the Nanda Devi East Base Camp, they separated into two groups.
The search was prompted by the four other climbers after the rest of eight did not report back. During an air search, the bodies of those eight people were found. A sizeable avalanche had occurred on the mountain in the route which was to be taken by the 8 mountaineers.
Bad weather had forced the first four to return back to the base. Nanda Devi East peak is at such a place, that rescue and recovery is more of a problem.
Moreover, chances of survival become low with passage of time. In fact, the recovery of bodies is marred with risks and challenges, adding to loss of life on account of rescue.
The Summit, Nanda Devi is always exposed to risk of avalanches. Inclement weather conditions were expected even today, and tomorrow due to the presence of Western Disturbances, leaving hardly any prolonged window for air rescue operations.
