Bizarre February weather in India leading to more cold and flu cases

All across India this year, people observed bizarre winter weather, in the form of very cold temperatures and excess rainfall. This weather in India is leading to the spread of viruses and driving adults and children in large numbers to nearby hospitals.

According to a media report hospitals in Uttar Pradesh are flooded with patients suffering from cold, cough, diarrhea, gastroenteritis and throat infections due to the frequent changes in the weather.

And as always children and elderly people have been the worst affected due to the unusually cold weather in the month of February. Many major hospitals in Allahabad are seen attending 200-250 patients in OPDs daily of all age groups, with majority being children. While most children are complaining of cold, cough and throat infections, aged ones are complaining about diarrhea, heart ailments and respiratory disorders.

Figures show that the month of February has been cold and unusually rainy for Allahabad. Rainfall figures have gone beyond 48 mm, much higher than the mean average rainfall of 17. 3 mm for the month of February.

Further, the average maximum temperature (23⁰C) for Allahabad this February remained lower than the mean maximum of 26.7⁰C.

Winter in India has almost come to an end but cold and flu continues to attack many. However, cold and flu season doesn't necessarily mean that you and your family will fall sick. You can escape falling ill if you remember to ask for a flu shot from your family doctor, wash and sanitize hands regularly and purify the air indoors.

99.97% of airborne particles including dust, mold, pollen, ragweed, pet dander and cigarette smoke in addition to viruses and germs can make you ill.
