Bitter cold grips Agra, temperature likely to drop to zero degrees

Piercing cold wave conditions have gripped several parts of North India and cold weather is slated to tighten its grip around Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab in next few days as temperatures are likely to take a plunge. Agra, in particular, recorded a minimum temperature of 0.8°C today due to which it was the fifth coldest city in plains of India.

The Taj city is expected to witness a minimum temperature close to zero degrees in next 24 hours while icy cold winds will continue to blow in the city. Even though the city is likely to remain fog-free and clear sky may prevail in the city, extreme cold conditions will persist, making morning and night extremely chilly.

The drop in temperature can be attributed to the change in wind pattern from warm and humid easterlies to dry and cold northwesterlies. These icy cold winds that are blowing across the plains of North India are coming directly from snow clad mountains in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

Not only are these winds extremely cold but also dry in nature; which has reduced the humidity levels significantly in the atmosphere. In wake of these winds, drop in minimum temperatures has been observed across the northern plains. In fact, most areas of the region remain abated from foggy conditions.
