Bihar battling floods due to poor dam management

Even though Bihar has failed to receive good rains this Monsoon season, the state is yet fighting against floods. Few areas of the southeast parts of the state have recorded heavy showers in past few days. On August 21, Gaya has recorded a whopping 87 mm of heavy showers.

However, the reason for these floods are considered to be associated with the mismanagement of a dam and barrage in the adjoining states of Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal.

Additionally, during last few days, southeast regions of Uttar Pradesh such as Varanasi, Allahabad and adjoining areas had also received heavy to extremely heavy rains. These rains have further worsened the situation as River Ganga flows from these areas.

Moreover, the situation worsened during the last 4 days so much so that Bihar’s Chief Minister had to seek help from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for an immediate action.

Bihar has received very less rains during this season but the floods were caused due to the water released from the dam of neighboring state of Madhya Pradesh. In fact, water released from Sone River also flooded few areas of Uttar Pradesh.

16 out of the 18 gates were opened by the dam authority on August 19, releasing a huge amount of water in one go. Due to this, the water levels in the Ganga rose to unparalleled levels in Patna and elsewhere in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

As per the environmentalists, the unprecedented floods in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh could have been dodged if water had not been released by the Bansagar Dam. This is a clear example of mismanagement of the dam authorities.

In addition to this, the congestion and residue in the River Ganga due to the construction of the Farakka barrage has also aggravated the situation.
