It wasn't a happy and sunny New Year's eve in Bhopal as the city observed dense fog and rain on the last day of 2014 and the first two mornings of the new year spoiling the celebratory mood. Even on the second day of the year, foggy conditions and rainy days forced the sun to stay under the covers. However, the forecast of Skymet Meteorology Division in India states that the residents of Bhopal may witness some sunshine by Sunday but with a gradual increase in chill.
Bhopal experienced inclement weather conditions in the month of December on multiple counts, including rain, dense fog and extremely cold days. Madhya Pradesh usually experiences a good measure of rain on the last and the first days of the year. The month of December generally records 16.7 mm of rain in the state. The average maximum temperature is around 26°C and the minimums settle at 11°C. This time, the vast difference in the usual maximum caused severe cold day conditions in the state capital.
While, December 31 recorded 16mm of rainfall, which is close to the normal average, the day maximum was far too different from the usual temperature. Usually, the maximum temperature in Bhopal remains in the mid 20's. On December 30, the maximum temperature settled at 23.3°C. However, on the next two days the maximums dropped significantly to record 13.5°C and 14.2°C respectively. The minimum temperature rose from 6.4°C on December 30 to 8.8°C and 12°C on December 31 and January 1, respectively.
On January 2, the maximum was recorded at 14.2°C, while the minimum settled at 13.4°C with not even a degree's difference between the two which is highly unusual. Since there was hardly any difference in the diurnal variations, the days and nights were equally cold.
