Bengaluru has recorded 157.8 mm of rainfall between the 01st and 13th of August 2024.  The city observatory has crossed its monthly normal of 147mm. It is in complete contrast to last year when the city headed for the driest August with a mere 12.6mm rainfall. More rains are likely through this week and the monthly total may add another 100mm in the remaining days of August.

Earlier, the city was lashed with heavy showers on the late night of 11th Aug and wee hours of 12th Aug. A downpour of 74 mm was recorded in a few hours, half of the monthly quota of August. August, as such, is the 3rd rainiest month, after September and October. Weather conditions remain pleasant and slightly cool in the evening and night hours. The maximum temperature remains in the high 20s and the minimum maintains close to 20°C.

More showers of varying intensity are likely during this week. A trough is marked from Rayalaseema to Comorin region, cutting across South Interior Karnataka. Later, a cyclonic circulation is likely to form over Sri Lanka and the Gulf of Mannar on 16th -17th August. Under its influence, a low-pressure area may form over the Comorin region on the 18th of Aug. This may become further stronger and shift westward over the Maldives and the extreme Southeast Arabian Sea on the 19th of August. A north-south trough will extend from this system, right from inception, which will pass through Kerala, South Interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema.

Under the influence of this system, the city of Bengaluru will witness monsoon showers during this week. Light to moderate showers are expected today and tomorrow. The intensity and spread may increase between the 15th and 17th of August. Light rains will continue, even thereafter and ease out sometime around 20th August 2024.
