Bengaluru recorded a maximum temperature of 38.5 degrees yesterday. This is the highest temperature of this year so far. The city scaled mercury of 38 degrees on two successive days. The hot weekend witnessed the blaze on Saturday and Sunday. It surpassed its earlier highest of 37.6 degree, recorded on two days in the month, 06 and 23 April. Mercury of 38 degrees and above amounts to heat wave conditions for the city, as it is situated on a plateau with a modest elevation of 3000 feet.

The record for April's, highest temperature in Bengaluru stands at 39.2 degrees, set back in 2016. The month of April this year has been extremely hot and the capital city has crossed 37 degrees for a record 14 days. In April 2016, the maximum temperature reached or crossed 37 degrees on 10 occasions. Mercury has been rising consistently for the last five days. From a maximum of 37 degrees on 24 April, the highest reached 38.6 degrees, yesterday.

The searing heat is likely to continue well into the beginning of May 2024. The Peninsular India trough which triggers the pre-monsoon showers remains displaced. This feature is likely to get back to its place in the first week of May. The temperature during this period may rise further, nearing the 39-degree mark. Pre-monsoon showers worth some relief are unlikely before 05 May 2024. April 2024 may go on record as one of the hottest in recent history.
