This year, Bengaluru has received heavy to very heavy rains and thundershowers during the month of September and October. In fact, Karnataka as a whole has recorded good showers during this time.

In the past 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Honavar witnessed heavy rain to the tune of 35.6 mm, Kalaburgi 20 mm, Karwar 19.6 mm, Raichur 20 mm, Vijaypura 6.8 mm, Agumbe 3.8 mm and Madekri 1.2 mm of rain.

In the same span of time, Bengaluru failed to witness any good spell of rain. Now, we expect light rain to continue over the ‘IT city’ for another 24 hours. Thereafter, the weather will become dry and hence it’s time for some relief from rains.

The reason for the sudden decrease of rain over most parts of Karnataka including Bengaluru can be attributed to the formation of a depression over west-central Bay of Bengal. Due to this weather system, winds have concentrated over west-central Bay of Bengal. With this, the moisture content over Karnataka will reduce and the dry northerly and northeasterly winds will blow over Bengaluru and the interior parts of the state, leading to dry weather.

However, this weather system is likely to reach Andhra Pradesh Coast around October 19, moving in westerly direction. Therefore, winds will once again change direction and rains will commence over Bengaluru around October 20 and 21.

However, during that time rains will be light in intensity and will occur at a few places. It is anticipated that heavy rains will not make a comeback over Bengaluru or other parts of Karnataka anytime soon. The people will enjoy a rain-free Diwali this year.
