Bengaluru rains begin; light spells to continue

August 19, 2017 5:02 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Rain in Bengaluru had remained mainly light in nature ever since the month of August began. However, July was also not very constructive in terms of rainfall for Bengaluru. It was on August 14 that the capital of Karnataka recorded extremely heavy rains of 129 mm followed by some moderate spells. Though from the last 48 hours, only light spells have occurred in the city.

The reason for these light traces of rains can be associated with the offshore trough that is running along the West Coast. As the trough was inactive, the city has mainly witnessed single digit rains and the intensity of these showers did not enhance.

Similarly were the last 24 hours for the capital of Karnataka, however, rains in the coastal belt of the state were moderate to heavy. In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Friday, Agumbe recorded extremely heavy rains of 98.8 mm, Madikeri 68 mm, Kannur 59 mm, Mangalore 31 mm, Hassan 17.2 mm and Bengaluru recorded light rains of 5.4 mm.

As per Skymet Weather, the offshore trough that is extending from Konkan & Goa to Kerala has become active once again thus resulting in heavy rains in Coastal Karnataka. Moreover, the system is expected to remain active for the next 48 hours thereby enhancing the rain activity over the coastal districts of the state.

In addition to this, the cyclonic circulation over Odisha is also likely to shift further westward and the extended trough which is tilting southwards may result in the rain over the regions of North Karnataka.

However, South Interior Karnataka and the capital city Bengaluru may witness light to isolated moderate spells. Though weather in Bengaluru will be cloudy and comfortable for the next 2-3 days. As against the monthly average of 147 mm of rains, Bengaluru has already recorded 244.2 mm of rains thereby surpassing its monthly target with a good difference.
