May 20, 2015 5:26 PM |

Bangalore rainPre-Monsoon activity across the country has peaked in the last five days, particularly in Northeast and South India. Several places in the region have recorded moderate to heavy rain. For instance Mangalore in South India has observed 56 mm of rain, Thiruvananthapuram 225 mm, Tiruchirapalli 66 mm, Karaikal 57 mm, Pamban 70 mm and Ananthapur 24 mm of rain during the five-day period.

During this period (5 days), Bangalore has recorded 121 mm of rain, while the overall rainfall during the month so far is 146 mm. This is far more than the average monthly rainfall of 110 mm.

The highest amount of rainfall observed in the city during the last 10 days is 66 mm, recorded on May 17, followed by 39 mm of rain observed on May 19. The May 17 rainfall also happens to be the maximum amount of rain recorded in 24 hours in last ten years. The previous highest was 61.2 mm, observed on May 28, 2005.

As the Southwest Monsoon inches closer, pre-Monsoon activity will become more intense and widespread in the city. Therefore, with 11 days still remaining for the month to come to an end, there are high chances of rainfall amounts exceeding further.

The recent spell of rain has caused the day temperature to plummet by almost 4 degrees. The maximums in the city are now hovering close to 30°C. Earlier the day temperatures were settling around 34°C, despite some rainfall activity.

The night temperatures have also registered a drop. They are now settling close to 20°C. The minimum temperature recorded in Bangalore on Tuesday morning was 21.4°C, which is normal for the month
