Bangalore records good rain, exceeds monthly average

Since the last five days the garden city Bangalore has been receiving good amounts of rain. The city during this period has recorded 78 mm of rainfall, which is almost double the monthly average of 40 mm. On April 11, Bangalore observed 32 mm of rain, while 6 mm and 12 mm of rain was recorded on April 12 and April 13, respectively. On the last two days, April 14 and April 15 the rainfall figures were 9 mm and 19 mm, respectively. And according to the weather models at Skymet, the city will continue to receive rain for another 24 hours.

A trough of low pressure running from Kerala to Madhya Pradesh across interior Karnataka and Maharashtra is the reason behind continuous rain in the city. From 2012 this (78 mm) is the highest amount of rain received during the month of April. And with half the month still to go this figure could rise further as there are chances of more pre-monsoon rains.

Normally during the month of April, pre-monsoon showers are not observed due to any significant system but because of small weather systems building in the region. Pre-monsoon showers begin early in the southern peninsula, around March, compared to that in North India. Only occasionally we observe some important weather systems like a cyclonic circulation or a trough building in the region, which could give good rain.

Rising temperatures in the southern peninsula is also a major factor for pre-monsoon showers in the region. By the month of March temperatures begin to rise with some places recording maximums in the high thirties.
