On New Year morning, several parts of the country recorded moderate to dense fog. This indicates that many areas are still reeling under the spell of fog.
Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh continued with dense to very dense fog for many consecutive days now, with the lowest visibility of 50 meters. This was followed by Varanasi with visibility dropping to 500 meters.
Meanwhile, Delhi-NCR reported shallow to moderate fog with visibility of 300 meters. Kolkata witnessed dense to very dense fog with visibility dropping to a mere 50 meters. Agartala in Tripura also observed a foggy morning with visibility dropping to 800 meters.
These weather conditions can be attributed to the series of cyclonic circulations marked over Rajasthan and Haryana, Jharkhand and adjoining West Bengal, respectively.
Also, due to localized phenomena, Bangalore witnessed a foggy and damp start of the New Year wherein the visibility dropped to mere 50 meters.
Due to this, at least sixteen flights have been delayed flying to and from Delhi. As far as trains are concerned, 122 trains in total are running extremely late due to fog.
The wind pattern has changed to relatively warmer and humid easterly winds. Along with this, minimum temperatures have been settling below normal and wind speed is also very light. All these factors are conducive for the formation of fog over the region.
Fog is expected to marginally decrease over the northern and Indo-Gangetic plains of India. Bright sunshine is likely but not for a very long period, therefore, maximum temperatures will not rise much.
Conditions are expected to remain the same during the next 24 hours as well with fog being recorded in many parts.
