May is the peak month for pre-Monsoon rain in Bangalore. And since it is one of the first places to be hit by the Southwest Monsoon, rainfall in the city is more frequent during the month. According to Skymet Meteorology Division, Bangalore in the last fortnight has observed some good weather activity.
So far the city has recorded 107.2 mm of rain, which is almost equal to the monthly normal of 110 mm. The highest amount of rainfall observed during the last 18 days is 66 mm, recorded on May 17. This also happens to be the maximum amount of rainfall recorded in 24 hours in last ten years. The previous highest was 61.2 mm, observed on May 28, 2005.
As the Southwest Monsoon inches closer, the pre-Monsoon activity will become more intense and widespread in the city. Therefore, with 12 days still remaining for the month to come to an end, there are high chances of rainfall amounts recording way above the monthly normal of 110 mm.
The recent spell of rain has caused the day temperature to plummet by almost 4 degrees. The maximums in the city are now hovering close to 30°C. Earlier the day temperatures were settling around 34°C, despite some rainfall activity.
The night temperatures have also registered a drop. They are now settling close to 20°C. The minimum temperature recorded in Bangalore on Tuesday morning was 21.4°C, which is normal for the month.
