Back to back Western Disturbances to cause fluctuating weather in Srinagar

The month of March is the rainiest for Srinagar, it is the only the month with three-digit rains at a whopping 115 mm. Moreover, even during the Southwest Monsoon months, these figures remain in the double digit only for the city of Srinagar.

Though the season is a change to Pre-Monsoon from March, but for this region, the weather continues to display wintry pattern. However, in March, the amount of snow decreases, and rainfall amount increases.

Talking about temperatures, maximum temperatures as well as the minimums have a large variation for Srinagar. The lowest maximum could be even zero and the highest maximum could go up till 28 degrees.

In the last few years also, the pattern has remained the same wherein maximums have seen such large variations.

Given below is a table of the highest and lowest maximums between 2014 and 2018

Minimum temperatures also have a large variation; however, the difference is not as large as in the maximums.

Sometimes, January and February invariably remain in minus. March onward, they come out of that bracket and temperatures see a rise. While there is no set pattern and temperatures go in negative as well but more often, they are inclined towards the positive side.

2016 was the year which saw the average temperature at 15.8 degrees against 13.9 degrees Celsius, which is 2 degrees above normal.

Usually, higher temperatures are seen in the second half of March. However, 2016 was an exception wherein March 3 saw 21.6 degrees Celsius and maximum was above 20 degrees in the last week as well.

In fact, that year, the city saw seven days where more than 20 degrees Celsius was recorded.

So far, in the first six days of March 2019, March 1 saw the maximum at 10.7 degrees Celsius, which further reduced. However, in the last two days maximums have increased to a good degree. In fact, on March 5, Srinagar saw maximum at 14.8 degrees Celsius which increased to 15.5 degrees Celsius on March 6.

Now in the coming week, temperatures will continue to fluctuate due to back to back Western Disturbance. Temperature variation will be seen with the figures coming down to single digit due to clouding and increasing in case of sunny skies.
