Back to back Western Disturbances promise rainy days in hills

During the last 24 hours, isolated light rains and snow were observed in Jammu and Kashmir, scattered rains occurred over Himachal Pradesh and fairly widespread rains occurred over Uttarakhand. While Tehri in Uttarakhand observed 9 mm rains, Mukteshwar recorded 35 mm rains. At the same time, light rains were observed in Dehradun, Shimla and Manali.

This weather can be traced back to a Western Disturbance which is persisting as an upper air system. This system is swiftly moving eastwards across Jammu and Kashmir. However, soon after, another fresh but feeble Western Disturbance is likely to affect the Himalayan region around February 24.

Now, the rainfall activity is likely to reduce over the hills for the next few hours as the system moves away. However, one or two places in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh might continue to receive light rains and snow, before it comes to a halt completely.

The activity will once again spike after a short break as soon as the next system approaches. This is when the state of Uttarakhand will receive scattered rains and snow with one or two moderate spells over extreme northern parts. Meanwhile, light rains and snowfall activities are likely over southern parts of Uttarakhand.

The state will continue with rain and snowfall activities for the coming days as well for the next three to four days. Next spell of rain and snow is likely over the hills around February 28 bringing widespread activity over the region.
