Back to back unseasonal rainfall to lash Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh

During the last 24 hours, unseasonal rainfall of light to moderate rain in intensity has been recorded in parts of Central India. Vidarbha and Marathwada (Maharashtra) and East Madhya Pradesh in particular, have been a witness to these activities.

The meteorologists at Skymet have predicted more unseasonal showers in the duo states today as well as tomorrow. The intensity would, however, taper after the next 24 hours. By January 10, the rain belt is expected to shift eastwards after completely vacating the central region.

Reason behind this unseasonal rainfall

Usually, the winter weather systems influence the weather of northern plains including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, North Rajasthan and max to max extend its impact up to West Uttar Pradesh. These systems fail to reach central parts of the country including Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh (barring North MP which observes winter rainfall).

However, sometimes owing to certain conditions, these systems get pushed away and manage to impact the weather of central region as well, thus resulting in rain. And whenever rains of such nature occur, these are termed as either unseasonal or untimely rains.

Weather systems

When a high-pressure area (commonly known as Anti-Cyclone) over parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh gets pushed away due to the approach of a Western Disturbance, the direction of the wind changes, often leading to the formation of a Convergence Zone. The merging of winds from two different directions leads to unusual rain in Central India. The probability of crop damage increases as there is always a possibility of hailstorm activities in association with these untimely rains.

Forecast

After two days of this unseasonal activity, there might be a gap of four to five days, wherein the weather of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra is expected to remain mainly dry. Thereafter, another Western Disturbance is likely to approach (around January 11) which would extend its impact up to the central region, leading to rains. There are bright chances of hailstorm in Madhya Pradesh during this span. The state of Maharashtra, however, may escape the fury this time.
