Avalanches likely as Northern hills set to witness heavy snowfall

Heavy snowfall in parts of Western Himalayas had already wreaked havoc in the hilly states of North India. Just a few days back, hefty snowfall had resulted in avalanches that hit the army base camps at various sectors in Kashmir claiming more than dozens of lives.

Avalanches were reported to have been playing their worst since January 25 when the first avalanche hit an army base camp in Sonamarg. This disaster killed a jawan whose body was later recovered. Just a day later on January 26, another avalanche bashed an army base camp in Gurez sector killing numerous army personnel including a Major. A number of civilians were also reported to have lost their lives burying under several feet of snow.

As the rescue operations were in its full swing, bodies of these people were recovered. As per the latest reports, the death toll mounted to 25 which included both the army personnel and local civilians. The natural calamity, however, took a break as the Western Disturbance that was responsible for these avalanches moved away.

But, now, as per Skymet Weather, a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to approach the Western Himalayas on February 3. This is expected to give heavy to very heavy snowfall in the Northern hills of the country.

Moreover, the weatherman also predicts chances of avalanches once again in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. As the fresh snow is loose in nature, it is more prone to slipping, paving way for calamities like avalanches.

Moreover, after the fresh snowy spells, temperatures across the North Indian hills stations are also likely to scale up, this would again result in the snow to melt thereby creating possibilities of avalanches again.

Hence, people are advised to take extra caution against the snowfall that could result in avalanches.
