Avalanche warning issued in Jammu and Kashmir after heavy snowfall

Just days after the deadly Siachen avalanche, a fresh avalanche warning has been issued by the Divisional Administration in Kashmir.

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has already been blocked due to heavy snowfall accompanied by landslides.

Several other roads including Jammu-Poonch and Doda-Kishtwar road have also been blocked owing to the snowfall.

Air traffic has also been hit hard due to snow at the Srinagar airport. Also, bad weather in Jammu also led to the cancellation of two flights. Fresh snowfall at Trikuta hills also affected chopper services to Vaishnodevi.

Medium danger avalanche has been issued in areas including Qazigund, Chowkibal-Tangdhar, Shopian, Ragini, Taya, Puttakhan, Malai, Zunegund, Keran Sector, Pharkiyan, Gulmarg, Bandipora Rajdhan, Neeru, Chakwali, Burab, Naugaon, Radha TMG, Kaiyan, Padam, Patlala, Zebra, Z-Gali, Dhudi, Macchal, Tsuntwarl, Kargil Sector Drass Sector, along with the higher reaches of Anantnag and Kulgam, says a report by GreaterKashmir

People residing in these areas have been advised to not to venture out for another 24 hours. Also, residents have been asked to keep cleaning the snow off their rooftops so as to avoid any damage due to roof collapse.

People living in avalanche prone areas of Pir Panjal range in Surankote and Mandi tehsils have been asked to not venture out owing to the medium danger avalanches.

Due to the national highway being closed nearly 400 vehicles remain stranded on the highway between Banihal and Udhampur. Also, about 100 passenger vehicles are stranded between Banihal and Ramsu. Due to landslides, 25 to 30 vehicles are stranded at Sheerbibi.
